Barbara A. Atkinson, DO, FACOI, FIDSA, FRSM, is Professor and Chief, Division of Infectious Disease in the Department of Internal Medicine at University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth. Dr. Atkinson also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at UNTHSC. She is a Diplomat of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Certification Examiners and is certified in Infectious Disease by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Atkinson earned her undergraduate degree with honors in Medical Technology at Michigan State University in East Lansing. She received a Master of Arts degree in Health Care Education from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, prior to being awarded her medical degree in 1988 from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Atkinson's postdoctoral training includes an Internal Medicine internship and residency, which she completed at MSU and Flint Osteopathic Hospital, and an Infectious Diseases fellowship at University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She holds certifications as Clinical Specialist in Microbiology and Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
Dr. Atkinson is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists, Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Royal Society of Medicine. She currently serves on the Dual Program Admissions, Research, and Medical Service Research and Development Plan committees at UNTHSC while fulfilling various other national, regional, and state level committee responsibilities. Dr. Atkinson was named 2009 Woman of the Year in Medicine and Healthcare by the American Biographical Institute. She has published more than 200 books, monographs, peer-reviewed journal articles, and abstracts.
